THE PROCESS

As a mixed media artist my process is as follows: lead > ink > color > shadows > highlights > brush

  1. each piece is sketched and hand drawn traditionally on paper with pencil.  I use mechanical pencils.  Usually 3 different lead types.

  2. then the piece is outlined, and hard shadowed with ink.  additional detail is added.  Usually I use 2 different pens. ...0.3 mm ball point pen for ultra fine detailing, a standard Pilot ball point gel pen, and a sharpie for filling in hard shadows.

  3. after the piece is inked I go back and soft shade, typically with a softer mechanical pencil lead.

  4. Then I scan the piece at 600 dpi, and the image is brought into Corel PhotoPaint.

  5. I color the piece digitally.  Typically with 100 to 250 layers depending on the detail in the piece.

  6. I shadow, highlight, and brush the piece further after coloration.
